The Purga created a darker, more violent Illuminati, one bent on … on retribution.” And they executed them, threw their bodies in the street as a warning to others to stop questioning church ruling on scientific matters. Specifically, Langdon cites a supposedly historical incident he calls “ La Purga.” In the film version, Langdon upbraids Swiss Guard head Commander Richter for his historical ignorance: “Geez, you guys don’t even read your own history, do you? 1668, the church kidnapped four Illuminati scientists and branded each one of them on the chest with the symbol of the cross, to purge them of their sins. The Catholic Church ordered a brutal massacre to silence them forever.” So the Church began to … hunt them down and kill them.” In another clip Langdon puts it even more succinctly: “The Illuminati were a secret society dedicated to scientific truth. In the 1500s they started meeting in secret because they were concerned about the Church’s inaccurate teachings, and they were dedicated to scientific truth. Here’s how Tom Hanks’s Langdon describes the relevant history in an exchange with Vatican police head Ernesto Olivetti: “The Illuminati … were physicists, mathematicians, astronomers. While the new film doesn’t repeat the specific charge of the murder of Copernicus, it maintains the larger historical context set forth in Brown’s Angels & Demons: the Church’s murderous persecution of science, especially in the Illuminati, a secret society that Brown claims counted Copernicus, Galileo and Bernini among its members.

The film is available now in a variety of formats. On May 15, the new Ron Howard adaptation of Angels & Demons - reworked as a sequel rather than a prequel to Howard’s 2006 smash The Da Vinci Code - will bring another installment of the Dan Brown version of history to millions of moviegoers. Still, THE VATICAN TAPES is fun and worth giving a look. The ending is a bit unique, however everything prior is the same stuff we’ve seen in scads of horror flicks.

My primary complaint about the film is that it is full of overused possession concepts and again offers nothing new in regard to exorcism films. I like how the possession turns out, although I won’t give away any spoilers. Director Mark Neveldine keeps the audience guessing until the end, and when things really start happening, they take off with a bang. The story and how it plays out is what really got me with THE VATICAN TAPES. Olivia Taylor Dudley does a great job as Angela, and Michael Pena rounds out the cast as Father Lozano. The acting is very good, with the afore mentioned stars headlining a great cast.

This was a nice surprise, as I think too many exorcism films are leaning that way. I was expecting this to be a found-footage or documentary style film, but turns out it’s shot like an actual movie. THE VATICAN TAPES is shot well and looks good onscreen. I like both actors, therefore I was hoping the film would be good. I was ready to like this film from the start, primarily because Dougray Scott and Djimon Hounsou are in the cast. It's all up to Father Lozano to wage war for more than just Angela's soul, but for the world as we know it. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. If you are not familiar with THE VATICAN TAPES, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of Lionsgate:Īngela Holmes is ordinary 27-year- old until she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Granted, THE VATICAN TAPES does not bring anything new to the table, but it’s still a fun film regardless and worthy of checking out. But in addition to these, the film also offers something that many of these other films do not: entertainment. It has a girl who may or may not be possessed, Catholic priests, and a bunch of jump-scare moments that sometimes play out into real horror.

On the surface, THE VATICAN TAPES looks like every other exorcism movie on the market.
